Ants, they are everywhere. In the house, the backyard, in books, on the internet, and even in
the bible. Ants can lift 50 times their own weight. If we could do that, we will be able to
carry a small car. There are four stages in the development of an ant. They are the egg,
the larva, the pupa, and the mature insect. After the queen mates, she will land on the
ground. Then, she will rub against a rock or another hard surface until her wings fall
off. The muscles holding the wings on will become nourishment for the eggs. Now the queen
digs a hole in the ground (or goes to another colony without a queen) and lays eggs there.
The ant eggs are yellowish colored and very small. They are hatched in about two to six
weeks and develop into white larvae or grubs. After a few weeks to several months the
larvae will turn into pupae. In a few more weeks they leave the pupal stage and are now
the adult insect.
The immature ants are fed and cleaned by the worker ants until they leave the pupal stage.
The ants are full size after the pupal stage.
